Fantastic trail with a great view! At first we were disappointed that the parking at the trail was full. We parked at overflow 0.5 mile away, but the extra hiking ended up being another really beautiful trail. Perks of this hike:
-fire tower with 360 view of the Catskills
-easy to follow, wide trail
-old ruins from a hotel that can be explored
-neat display at the top that features some history and fun facts
-friendly rangers
They do have rattlesnakes. That can be a pro or con depending on the person.
Also, it’s an out and back hike, I generally prefer a loop but didn’t mind it this time.
Really beautiful sunrise hike - these were taken in September. Began hiking around 4:30am to catch the sun beginning to peak through around 6am. So much to explore once you’re up there between the fire tower and the ruins - the overlook itself was a little hard to find in the dark. Steady incline up and not many rocks to manuever around but does require some endurance.
This hike is worth the amazing views at the top, as well as really cool old hotel ruins and a fire tower to climb (one of 5 in the Catskills). The trail itself is a dirt road, so not technically difficult, but non stop uphill climb that is steep and relentless. Bring water and good footwear. In the winter it will get very icy so bring micro spikes or trail crampons in that season for safe traction. And beware of rattlesnakes in the summer, don't let a dog or child wander offtrail or there is a chance of getting a poisonous snake bite. Mountain Laurel blooms in June and the flowers are quite beautiful!
I am going to be brutally honest. It was a very hard hike for me but I was grateful to do it. I am over weight and out of shape but I made it to the top. It was a great veiw and I was surprised that you could climb up the tower. It was a great veiw. I would recommend bringing tp. The out house at the top didn't have any lol.
Straight uphill on the way in makes for easy on the way back. Firetower at the top makes for incredible views. Well worth the trek. Ruins are also incredible to explore.
Location: 353 Meads Mountain Road, Woodstock, NY 12498. (845) 256-3000. Overlook Mountain is the southernmost peak of the Catskill Escarpment in the central Catskill Mountains near Woodstock. It's about a 45 minute drive from Hudson but the view is totally worth it!
