Drove two hours to tour the museum and grounds and well worth the trip! We pent several hours going through the museum and library. There are two floors to stroll through and many events to learn about. We also walked the grounds and garden area which were beautiful. Plan on three hours to visit everything to see.
To understand FDR, seeing his home is a must - it really helps to appreciate the wealthy Hudson Valley background from which he came, the influence exercised by his mother, and why Eleanor struggled so much here. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis from the visitor centre; we arrived at 9.50am on a Sunday and had no problem getting on the 10am tour, and tours run through the day. NPS passes work for the home but not the adjacent presidential library. Entry is only by guided tour, but as usual the National Parks Service guides are engaging, knowledgeable and informative. As a preserved museum, the interior feels rather dark and gloomy, but the library and the upstairs bedrooms in particular offer fascinating glimpses into FDR’s life. The only criticism I have is that a fairly small proportion of the home is open to the public (the top floor and servants’ wing are all off limits), which is a shame as it provides an incomplete picture. Despite that, what is on offer is excellent. FDR and Eleanor’s simple grave is in the old rise garden, on the way to or from the house.
Remarkable park and museum. I wish I had done more research, as it was immediately apparent that I did not budget nearly enough time for this place. I will have to come back. Purchase the tours ahead of time - and early - as this park gets a lot more traffic than the Vanderbilt Mansion down the road. This is a very well preserved and cared for park, library, and grounds collectively.
The landscape is amazing at first view. Gardens are fragrant with peonies and roses where you will find the burial site of FDR and Eleanor. Tour is nice but pretty short. Most of the house is off limits due to space. Regardless, it's history and a must see. The house was free with a National Park pass. FDR library is separate and is $10 per person NPP not accepted for this entry
Of the three mansions we visited today, the FDR home and museum were my favorite. If you only visit one, visit this site! The house tour and the museum both require separate admission so keep that in mind but both were worth it.
Our tour guide Linda was awesome. She was very friendly and knowledgeable which really made the tour. She even took us to an area of the house you don’t normally see (this was because we were a small group). It was nice to see how FDR lived and see the human side of a great President. This was a beautiful home.
The museum was nice but not necessarily a must do unless you have the time. We easily spent an hour walking through the museum but could have stayed longer if we didn’t have a res At Vanderbilt.
