Great experience. It's a bit far off in the woods.. The compound consists of several buildings. There is a main welcome center, the house and stables, and the library and museum. You can see the bed he was born in, Look to your right and see the garden where he and his wife are buried.
The museum is enormous and comprehensive. Starts with his election and goes to his death. It ends in the archives. There is one mention of his girlfriend...blink and you miss it. There's piece of the USS Arizona and tons and tons of correspondence. Letters from the American people to him, letters from kings and prime ministers. War correspondence.
Plan on spending the day. There is a Cafe and gift shop (which was closed)
The Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum was definitely a great sight to see, as I have been on a tour of presidential gravesites; as it was nestled in the same place as Springwood and FDRs museum. The museum was a great educational experience and I learned much about the life and presidency of one of my personal favorite Presidents. My only slight knock on the ratings would be the inavailability of the gift shop, which was closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, so I had to purchase a nice souvenir online.
When it comes to Presidential libraries, the first (this one) is clearly the best.
The highly interactive and constantly updated exhibits, artifacts, and more provide the visitor with a well-balanced perspective of both the triumphs and trials this great leader faced. And, while the more current political climate seems to sometimes put personal ego above service for the good of many, I left the museum with a renewed sense of patriotism in terms of service to my fellow human being, rather than merely freedom for myself. Enjoy!
Note: I have the National Park Senior pass, but the museum and library (as opposed to the home) are administered by the National Archives as are all presidential libraries, do the pass does not cover entry. Nonetheless, senior admission is only $6.00, a true bargain.
PS; The New Deal shop and bookstore is incredible too!
The Franklin d Roosevelt library and museum were a fun quick stop for us. We had our dog so we couldn’t go inside anything but it was nice to just look around and see a few things. The house is currently under renovations it seems because there were a lot of gates around but it was still nice to look at. It was nice for a quick 30 min look around but nothing crazy for me. Again we did have the dog so I’m sure it’d be more cool to go inside and see things.
What an amazing trip if you’re a history fan of any level. The library is a must and stole the show for us. From his car to he and Elenor’s burial site to his wheelchairs - all the buildings on site are a great frozen time in American history.
