  Arrived after 5 pm so we missed any of the possible tours but still enjoyed looking around the grounds. Lots of history associated with the Roosevelts here. The garden was beautiful with a wide selection of plants and flowers. Didn’t hike any of the trails due to the lateness of the day but looked fun to explore.

  While fewer people make the effort to visit Val Kill, Eleanor Roosevelt’s widowhood home, I found this a far more satisfying experience than FDR’s home and definitely worth the short drive from there. It feels a much warmer and more homely place, unlike the large and cold Springwood, and has plenty of historical associations of its own; this was where JFK met ER to seek her endorsement in 1960. Visit is by guided tour only, the tickets picked up when you arrive at the small visitor centre. Our NPS guide was fantastic, and there is nothing off limits in terms of Eleanor’s rich and fascinating life. In many ways, her strong support for social justice was far stronger than her husband’s, and her life after his death was amazing. Being here brought something of that alive, but also gave a small insight into the home life of a fascinating woman.

  Beautiful landscape, peaceful settings, and hiking trails. Closed on Mondays and Tuesday. Be sure to check NPS website for info.

  The site was closed when our tour group was there but we were able to walk around the property, with our own tour guide expounding on the significant history of the place. It's where the Roosevelt’s served hot dogs to the King & Queen of England and Churchill swam in the pool smoking a cigar. This is a small few buildings on the Roosevelt’s property where they brought dignitaries to chill after all the serious discussions about the war. Eleanor stayed here a lot of time after her husband's death. Lovely flowers this time of year.
