I have been training at this gym for over a year. Coach is truly old school in his mentality but clearly has evolved in his in his years in teaching. He emphasizes "non-contact sparring" to work movements and reactions. He notes that boxers get most of their shots in training before the fight and has intentionally moved in this direction to avoid this. I have found him to be a fascinating character to get to know, an have learned a great deal from him discussing history, politics, and social theory. Having said that, the polarity in the reviews here do not surprise me at all. He is teaching you- he has a system that he has worked out over years. He is adaptive within that system, but the system is non-negotiable. Some people don't like that much in the beginning, but it actually starts to make a lot of sense over time. I will also say that I have found him to be very protective of his fighters. This is boxing. This is a boxing gym. People punch each other in the head. I have seen Coach be very resistant to putting anyone in the ring with gloves on unless he believes they can protect themselves. I have seen fighters new to the gym come in with stories of their prowess and experience and demanded to go directly to sparring. Finding out they didn't know everything already was probably as painful as any hit they took. I have been present when people have gotten stung (it has happened to me). Again this is a boxing gym. Coach has always been very quick to stop those matches before they get out of hand. He will also discuss at length what happened, how it could have prevented, and what the fighters should do next to take care of themselves.
Hahaha! Ok. Ive seen some poor reviews and i gotta say that djata is an old school trainer and is literally a boxing genius. I went there years ago and im looking to get back into it, if i do im going back to coach bumpus. I went there thinking i knew boxing because ive always been a huge fan, but turns out i knew nada! Hes a no nonsense legit old school philly fighter and comes from a family tree of pro fighters, but i tend to strongly believe there was more to the negative reviews which actually compelled me to describe my experience. He made sure i was fundamentally sound before u started sparring, and he makes it clear that sparring is an option and not a requirement. Coach bumpus taught me everything i know and if you think freddie roach, the mayweathers, ronnie shields etc are proper coaches than bumpus is youre best pick! IF YOU WANT A LEGIT, GENUINE OLD SCHOOL TRAINER, WHO KNOWS BOXING FROM A TO Z, THEN THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO.
