Great walk with great views of the marsh and of trains.
I volunteered here for years, and it will remain one of the most special places in my heart. The rangers are absolutely wonderful people who care deeply for preserving and protecting the natural environment. They take care in managing the unit at Westbrook, as well as the other units scattered throughout Connecticut. It was a pleasure working with them and the skills and experience I gained have been invaluable. If you've never been to there, it's worth the time to go, walk around, and take in the beauty. And if you get the chance, tell Kris and Shaun I said hi!
Well marked and cared for hiking trails. Plenty of points of interest including several stone buildings (at the beginning for those not up for a hike), 2 viewing decks, historic ruins, and lots of water views. About a 1.5 mile hike if you do the full loop.
Also has a nice lawn at the beginning - seems like a great picnic spot!
It was a pretty area. I didn't see one bird, which was disappointing and odd. Even down at the water. The only wildlife I really saw were dragonflies and butterflies. I didn't see any specific markings for the trails, so I'm not even sure which one I started out on. The forest was nice looking, but incredibly buggy, so wear bug spray. Overall, not one of my favorite wildlife refuges, but not a bad place if you want to take a quiet walk in the woods. There is a small bit of an incline coming back up, so just be wary if you have any problems walking.
