  I've been seeing Dr. Vail since she was with her previous practice and I've always been happy with the care I've received from her. Her yearly skin cancer screenings are always super thorough and she is always willing to listen to my concerns and questions and helped me greatly with my eczema. She was cautious and conservative with each step of my treatment and made sure it was right for my particular case. Yes, she is very strict about the mask policy, but that's her choice and her office; based on my conversations with her in my appointments, she is doing it to keep patients safe.

  My wife and I saw Dr. Vail for the first time yesterday for skin checks. We were both very pleased by the most thorough dermatological exams we’ve ever had, by Dr. Vail’s good explanations of our skin abnormalities and her procedures, and by the courteous treatment we received from her and her staff.
  
  We are elderly and were well into adulthood before sun screens became available, so we’ve had many severe sunburns, especially me with my fair skin—I burn if I stand in front of a light bulb. Both of us have had skin cancers, and over the years we’ve seen a number of dermatologists. We’ve been disappointed by too many dermatologists who do perfunctory exams and pay more attention to the clock than the patient, especially in the last few years.
  
  I was young during the hippie era, when skinnydipping was the national sport of the young, so I had several all-over sunburns. Recently, I had ultra-high-power radiation treatment for prostate cancer that affected my skin, rupturing a large cherry angioma in the radiation field. So I was pleased that Dr. Vail, unlike many of her colleagues, gives patients the option of getting a genuine full-body exam—recommended as the best way by the American Academy of Dermatology—or leaving underwear on.
  
  Reading the reviews here and elsewhere, I was puzzled by the many bad reviews, often strongly felt, mixed in with the excellent ones, especially given that Dr. Vail is annually rated one of the top docs in the Philly area. One factor might be that she doesn’t engage much in small talk, which some people may perceive as uncaring or unfriendly. Some of the complaints seemed related to the time pressure that all doctors are under these days, but I felt she was trying hard to balance the trade-offs between speed and good patient care, and I didn’t feel rushed. (The pressure may be less on her because she practices alone and is not beholden to a group that places more emphasis on money.) We had no problems with her, but I wonder if her diplomatic skills in dealing with complaints, disagreements, and difficult people are not as good as her technical skills and patient empathy.
  
  Although we’ve had only limited experience with Dr. Vail, we’re making her our permanent dermatologist and recommending her to friends. We recommend her to you.
