We took a ~1-hour tour with owner Carol to see her Shaker ruins. She is most welcoming and informative! The museum is really more of an outdoor tour of the grounds--there is no charge but the cost to restore this property is enormous and donations and accepted. The workhouses, ice house, root cellar, smokehouse are all charming and fascinating to see--the history of the property AND the future plans for the property are equally fascinating and provocative. The place is an extraordinary rustic-chic wedding and events venue. I can't wait to see how this enterprise unfolds and evolves.
I’m a curious local who has seen the property transform while driving by over the last few years. On a whim, I reached out to Carol to discuss arranging a historical tour, and she graciously replied. A few days later, she spent an hour of her day personally leading me and my friend around the grounds and through the accommodations. She’s done a splendid job restoring this very special spot! The Shaker heritage has been lovingly honored with a personal creative flair. She is clearly genuinely invested in creating a beautiful space for celebrations and, perhaps even more remarkably, sharing it with the community. I think it makes a delightful, spirited event venue. I would encourage anyone interested in learning more to reach out to her.
This place transported me into the locations I envisioned reading about, like The Secret Garden, when I was a kid…I definitely felt like Anne of Green Gables, and found joy in the amazing nature :) There is so much to explore and see, as well as to sit back and simply take in the gorgeous and lush meadows. I love the swings on the tree, it made me feel like a child again and the photos definitely caught that magic! The hosts put a lot of thought into this space, and have so many wonderful stories to share about the property. The hosts are great people, easy to talk to, and the place speaks for itself how much love and care was put into it. There are some fun hidden nooks on the property as well as delightful details that conserve the heritage too…Thank you so much, I have wonderful memories from here that I will always cherish. :)
Classical Tents has had wonderful interactions with Carol and Gerard at every turn! In the past year we have provided rental items for fund raisers, personal events and a wedding. In every instance Sassafras has been communicative , ethical, and a joy to work with . I have so enjoyed watching the barn , stone house, and grounds at Sassafras evolve due to the hard work put in by Carol , Gerard and their team. And what a spectacular view! Sassafras has been brought back to life again.
I fell in love with The Ruins at Sassafras the first time I saw it. It is truly a unique venue that transports you to a bygone time when life was simpler. Carol and Jerome are absolutely adorable and they are so passionate about restoring and preserving the historic Shaker settlement. I believe in them and their mission 100% and look forward to seeing it unfold in the near and far future. I had the pleasure of working with them on a fundraiser for Ukraine that was attended by 200 people. Although there were weather challenges, it went off without a hitch and they were the most gracious hosts. Bottom line, they are truly good people and the venue is spectacular. I will recommend it to all of my clients.
