This place is special and if I could give it ten stars I would. We stayed 4 nights in the Timberline room in July 2023. The resort itself is beautiful — one room nicer than the next — everything the absolute highest quality Adirondack construction. The meals are off the charts… everything is included without restrictions… top shelf alcohol (eg Claze Azul)… wine pairings…. five course dinner. The chef Jesse is a real talent— everything super fresh and delicious without being fussy or trying too hard. Jesse’s wife Rachel is food and beverage manager and she is super charming and lovely and devotes whatever time is needed to make sure any dietary needs are met and exceeded. The people who work here couldn’t be nicer— I’m actually sad to leave since we got to know so many of them. Shout out to Shannon, Carly and Reuben in the front office and Janet in the dining room— you guys are exceptional! I could go on and on… the lake, Bethel Woods, the Chapin property…. I’m counting the days until I can come back.
At the beginning of February, my boyfriend and i decided we needed a getaway that was filled with luxury. I started searching for the perfect place knowing that delicious food (understanding an allergy to dairy), hiking, serenity and most importantly, really great customer service were our key need to haves for the trip. After exhaustive research, we felt that we would probably find most of what we were looking for at Chatwal so we decided to go for it. And my goodness was that the best decision we have made in a long time.
We left for the lodge on a Wednesday in mid February and as we pulled up to the front, we were met by the fabulous Ruben who immediately made us feel so welcome. We were not asked to fill out paperwork, or do ANYTHING except understand the basic layout of the place and get keys to our room and drink champagne. Ruben took us to the glorious Mount Laurel suite which was a short ride down the hill from the main lodge. The suite was absolutely gorgeous with views of the lake and beautiful decor spread throughout. Ruben made sure we had what we needed and left us to it.
That evening (after a bath in the clawfoot tub and a glass of wine they had left for us) we went up to the main lodge for dinner. I don't think either of us knew at that point quite how unbelievable this trip was going to be. From that point on every meal and greeting from the staff exceeded all expectations we had for the stay. I had one of the best meals of my life that night, between Janets perfect service and Rachels (F&B manager) great wine recommendations and Chef Jesse's exquisite skills, we realized we had found a place that we would not soon forget.
The next morning we met Simon the GM and Cliff who manages the copious amounts of activities they provide and while we enjoyed an amazing breakfast we discussed with Cliff what we wanted to do that day. He had so many ideas for us on how to fill our time but not once did we feel pressure to participate. He is such a wealth of knowledge of the grounds but also just an incredibly awesome guy! We decided that a hike was in order so after breakfast we were offered hiking boots, jackets and even hiking socks for the adventure. We spent the next 2 hours walking a beautiful trail with the only other couple who were staying at the lodge as Cliff told us about the landscape and different animals we might see. After the hike we got back to Cliffs truck and he had champagne and strawberries waiting for us.
The rest of the trip continued this way, with port delivered to our room each night while we were at dinner, a unique cookie or dessert that had been made specially for us by the UNBELIEVABLE Pastry Chef and the fire place turned on to welcome us back.
Each night we spent time chatting with the staff after dinner and discovered some of the most lovely people who understood what great service really is.
Simon, Cliff, Rachel, Janet, Ruben, Jill, Kelly, Tristan and Jesse, THANK YOU for giving us the best vacation I think I have ever had (and I travel A LOT). We are already looking at dates for our next trip out to Chatwal because once you find a place with this level of exceptional service, decor, food, activities and most importantly, staff, you can never forget it and every vacation and experience I have for a long time to come will be compared to this and I guarantee, it is unlikely I will ever find anything close.
Last but not least, I would like to make a point of mentioning Simon again. Being a General Manager is not an easy job, especially when you provide service like this. But this man truly knows what he is doing. He runs a tight ship and clearly values his staff immensely. Thanks for taking such good care of us Simon, you and your staff are what make Chatwal as special as it is.
Let me start by giving some perspective. I've worked in and out of Hotels my entire adult life and over the past 10 years have had a job where I travel all over the U.S. and internationally to some of the BEST hotels.
So, given this, The Chatwal Lodge is stupendous. We went late February looking for a quiet, high end service, 3 night getaway. This is exactly what we found. This is the kind of place where every detail is considered.
We stayed in the Mountain Laurel room. It should be noted that there were no other rooms attached to us being occupied at the time. Noise is a big concern for me in a hotel. Since there was nobody next/above us, it was extremely quiet. The room itself is just lovely, very comfortable, very clean and a great mixture of wood design plus modern. I usually keep the "do not disturb" on the door but not here. Not only did they clean up twice a day, they left treats all the time! Couldn't wait to find the next one. We never saw the cleaning crew. There are cameras all over the place and I'm sure they are used to assist the Lodge with providing a great guest experience.
Oh, but wait, want to actually go and do something? Captain Cliff is at your service. We did hiking, archery and shot an air gun. He is gung ho and ready to go. He's Great. Seems to be a true outdoorsman and also has great flexibility depending on guest needs.
The alcohol selection is great. The food is some the best I've had anywhere. All of it. AND, I have a dairy allergy. They were able to acommodate the allergy perfectly.
Thank you Rubin, Rachel, Cliff, Simon, Janet, Jill, Jesse (chef), the pastry chef for making Great dairy free options and the bartender, I think her name was Kelly?
We loved our stay at the lodge. We went up for a 4 night stay in the winter and couldn’t have been happier with our room (the Sunset), the ambience, the people, and the food. The room was so well designed and spacious, it was like having our own private cabin, with two fireplaces, a comfortable bed, and tranquility. The staff are lovely, and the chef cooks outstanding, creative dishes with complex flavors and presentations (and you will be very full, which is unusual with such fine dining). The wine pairings are also clearly brainstormed and add enjoyment to the meals. Everyone at the lodge was very professional, thoughtful and gracious, eager to help us find the right activity (Captain Cliff), surprise us with snacks and beverages in our room, or contribute in some way to our leisurely stay. We’ve stayed in several places in the Catskills, but Chatwal is now our favorite.
Our trip in mid June was a much needed respite. The staff is well trained and the answer to any question or request was always, "yes, of course!" The grounds are breathtaking and the lake is tranquil and a beautiful place to watch the sunset. The accommodations are fabulous with every attention to detail. The chef was superb and the meals were unique, locally sourced from breakfast to dinner!
