known as an artist’s get-a-way, and wonderful location for an intimate wedding
Wonderful hospitality, great location, and newly renovated, well designed rooms - I can not recommend Sparrow House enough. Take a long weekend and enjoy Cornwall-on-Hudson, Beacon, Cold Spring, numerous hikes, restaurants and some peace and quiet.
Vacation rental, film location, artist retreat, wedding venue, event venue, so much room for activities. I like this place. It was built in the 1850's but has been restored with a lot of beautiful modern touches. They just finished a second bathroom and artist studio renovation, giving the house 8 total bedrooms and 2 full baths. Looking forward to seeing what events they host in 2020. Very magical.
Situated in a magnificent spot just moments from Storm King, Sparrow House is a dream getaway for a vacation upstate, whether for the weekend or longer. The home's historic charm is matched by delightfully creative (and well-appointed) rooms, with plenty of private and common space to stretch out and enjoy the peace and quiet. There are tons of nearby activities, from the aforementioned Storm King, to fishing, hiking, and canoeing, and you can easily use the location as a jumping-off point for day trips to Beacon, Newburgh and Cold Spring. I have stayed at Sparrow House twice, both times with groups of people, and there is no want for space or amenities - the kitchen, dining room, and outdoor space are ideal for cooking, grilling, and celebrating the night away. If you need a break from city life and are looking to experience a particularly picturesque part of the Hudson River Valley, this is your best bet.
If you and a group of friends are looking to get out of NYC for a weekend or more, Sparrow House is the place to go! I've stayed at quite a few locations along the Hudson and Delaware rivers, and this one has been the best experience so far.
First of all, it's easy to get to Sparrow House without a car. A lot of train stops along the Hudson and Delaware require you to have the foresight to book a taxi in advance, and if you didn't, theres ONE Lyft/Uber driver servicing the entire region at a given time. I've spent hours at train stations waiting for someone to drive me to my next destination. Its proximity Beacon and Newburgh and tourist destinations like Dia: Beacon and West Point ensure there's plenty of transport for everyone.
Second of all, the grounds are gorgeous. There is plenty of space to be outside with seating, a grill, AND a fire pit (firewood included). Plus, you can see the river without having to pay riverfront prices. Being in the city, you can forget how relaxing it is to enjoy a beer outside around a fire, and you don't have to go camping to experience it at Sparrow House!
Third, the house is exquisite. The owner has obviously put a lot of hard work into preserving the original bits of the house (it was built in the 1860s?!) but has brought a unique and fun twist to each room. I slept in the 80s room and loved looking at all the retro bits of nostalgia. The kitchen was HUGE - definitely big enough for several people to help cook at once - and there's also a full dining table in there.
It's the perfect getaway place: not too close but not too far from the city, you get to experience charming, old architecture with quirky new design in one space, the grounds feel remote but you can walk up the hill to a bar if you want a little bit of activity, it's close to nature and hiking and canoeing or art and antiquing and nightlife if you're with a group with split interests, but most of all, it's just a good house to hang around at with your buddies. 100% would recommend.
