  Shawangunk Ridge, also known as the Shawangunk Mountains or The Gunks, is a ridge of bedrock in Ulster County, Sullivan County, and Orange County in New York state, extending from the northernmost point of the New Jersey border to the Catskills.
  The view from the viewpoint is beautiful and it's even more so on a sunny day!

Deer Management Program - Mohonk Preserve

Mohonk Preserve's 2023 Deer Management Program. Deer hunting occurs on the Preserve as part of our Deer Management Program. Hunters play a critical role in helping to mitigate the impacts of deer overbrowsing on the unique forests of the Shawangunk Mountains. Hunting permit registration will open on Friday, August 25th.

The Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground is open and accepting reservations for the 2023 season! Prices per campsite (up to two tents and four people): American Alpine Club or Mohonk Preserve members - $28 per night. Non-members - $42 per night.

Shawangunk Grit - Mohonk Preserve

The ridge where you'll be riding is made from bedrock called Shawangunk Conglomerate, also known as Shawangunk Grit. Shawangunk Grit slabs were used to make millstones around the turn of the century and some of these millstones can still be seen on the land today.
