The region is outlined by the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway, an officially designated New York State Scenic Byway. It’s beautiful here!

Shawangunk Ridge, also known as the Shawangunk Mountains or The Gunks, is a ridge of bedrock in Ulster County, Sullivan County, and Orange County in New York state, extending from the northernmost point of the New Jersey border to the Catskills.
The view from the viewpoint is beautiful and it's even more so on a sunny day!

Review of The Shawangunk Mountains

The Shawangunk Mountains extend from the New Jersey state line north to Rosendale, New York. Within a roughly 70 mile radius of New York City. See the clear glacial lakes and beautiful plummeting waterfalls. Lofty crags and deep crevices where snow and ice may linger long into summer.

Shawangunk Grit - Mohonk Preserve

The ridge where you'll be riding is made from bedrock called Shawangunk Conglomerate, also known as Shawangunk Grit. Shawangunk Grit slabs were used to make millstones around the turn of the century and some of these millstones can still be seen on the land today. A nod to the history of the ridge is found in the Shawangunk Grit logo. Registration
