We had a lovely time at the old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. We mainly went to see the air show. It was fun to watch and learn about the early aircraft that were being flown.
What a great place this is! The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome has a fantastic museum and a great air show. The museum features the history of early aircraft with both real and reproduction airplanes from the early 1900's to the 1940's. The ORA has several hangers full of early aircraft. Displayed along with the early planes are early 20th century cars and motorcycles. They even have an early car made by Sears! Depending on your interest in these subjects you could an hour or more in the museum.
The air show is both thrilling and fun to watch. It is easy to watch the planes from the ground and there were plenty of seats available. They have a corny humorous plot that adds to the show. The show not only incorporates vintage aircraft but vintage automobiles and even a WW1 tank. To my knowledge this is the only air show in the US that regularly features these aircraft. If you have any love of history, aviation, or just want to watch an interesting show than this is the place for you.
Fun day watching the planes. Would definitely return. The museum is also very cool. Great to learn about the history of aircraft!
I'm giving this 5 stars because it's a great organization preserving some awesome pieces of history.
That being said, if you're looking for some big, impressive museum, this isn't it. It's $12 per adult for four buildings with planes in it. There's no AC so the buildings are very warm. Doesn't take long to see everything.
If you really like old planes, you'll love this. If it's not really your thing, you might not find it worth it.
Great time at a beautiful location.
The grass runway was lined with old aircraft. Plaques offering the history of each plane. Old cars on display, again with their history on a plaque.
Vintage airplanes flying overhead, vintage cars driving around, and the staff wearing vintage clothing - brings you back to the early 1900's!
The 2pm air show was exciting, entertaining and well worth the ticket price. The open cockpit biplane ride over the Hudson was the absolute pinnacle!
The indoor museum was pretty awesome too. It offered close up views of very old planes, such as a full size reproduction of the Wright Bros plane.
There is a concessions stand with food and ice cream, but I had brought my own picnic lunch to snack on while watching the airshow. And of course, they have a gift shop. The prices at the gift shop seemed very reasonable as far as gift shops go.
It's not required, but I'd recommend dressing up in vintage clothes for the full experience. We did and had a blast!
We're Living History and Family Fun. Our founder, Cole Palen, grew up next to a great 1930's Hudson Valley airport dreaming that he would own and fly the machines he saw overhead and spent the rest of his life bringing the vision alive. He believed, "It isn't an airplane if it doesn't fly," and the non-profit Rhinebeck Aerodrome ...
