What a fascinating spot. Aside from Norman Rockwell's interesting history and retrospective, we enjoyed seeing the work from other artists as well as the Tony Sarg exhibition. I recommend watching the short video downstairs for extra context and history. The gift shop has a nice assortment of home goods, postcards, art prints, puzzles, and more.

    Amazing man and amazing art.
He could have gone any direction but chose illustrations.
    323 Saturday evening post covers.
This museum is not overwhelming, but still allows you to see Rockwell's various sides and social commentary.
You could go back once a month and still not take in all he had to say.
This place is a national treasure.

A truly wonderful museum devoted to the work of a great American artist, with galleries available for special traveling exhibits of other renowned artists. It is one of those places where people can come back to over the course of many years to appreciate Norman Rockwell’s prodigious creativity and draw inspiration from it. If you want to better understand a period when America was truly a great nation (not without serious problems, but empowered to tackle them), this is a place for that reflection. PS - If you want to visit Norman Rockwell’s Studio (separate building on the museum grounds) ask specifically for a ticket and hours for the tour. Post-pandemic, ticket required.

This was our first time visiting and we honestly did not know what to expect. I thought I was somewhat familiar with several of his cover illustrations. We were surprised at just how many covers were familiar.

This was an amazing museum really. Not many people used the interactive app that gives you recorded background on the subjects and work but I strongly recommend this. It’s much better than simply reading the plaques. We’ve been to many museums all over the world and cities, we always go for the audio tour. Short of having a human guide this is the most immersive way to optimize your experience. So many people just walk around looking bored after some initial excitement, but take my advice here. And remember to take earbuds along.

Also watch the short movie on the lower level to see the tone on Rockwell. I really enjoyed the amazing original covers, imagining a simpler, honest, small town…a kind of naive American culture from the past. I realize this wasn’t necessarily the case, but it’s a nice utopian place to allow your mind to wander to occasionally, even if just for a few hours.

As you can tell I highly recommend the museum and appreciate the experience. An excellent Museum overall!

An outing that captivated our family of four (a teen and tween included) was a trip to the Norman Rockwell museum in Stockbridge MA. Rockwell lived in this town for the last 25 years of his life and an enormous collection of his works are now housed in this beautiful museum.

We didn’t know much about Rockwell except that we delight in one of his paintings that sits on our piano at home, in plate form. I found this plate at a thrift store when we first moved to the US and liked the image of the little girl putting on lipstick. I’ve since learned that this was one of his works from the 20s.

Wandering through the gallery of his Saturday Evening Post covers is truly a joyful experience! His ability to paint human expression with such detail is amazing. It is also quite something to ponder on the times that he was painting in - the Great Depression and then World War 2, and to notice how he kept subjects light for the sanity of all. Some of his most famous paintings of this period were The Four Freedoms and these were used to raise a significant contribution towards war bonds. It was wonderful learning more about those from one of the guides who was walking around.

We also very much enjoyed the exhibition by artist Nora Krug also on display at the time (April 23) and ended up buying her two books.

What an amazing experience and one that will stay with us always. If you have the opportunity to visit I’m sure you will find you feel the same.
