I was very apprehensive about going for my first treatment and like another person said, you may feel worse afterwards. I found myself more depressed after the first treatment and waited a week and a half before I scheduled another. I contacted them and told them about my reaction. I am glad I did as the treatments now seem to be working. Doctor Calabrese and her staff are very kind and knowledgeable. She lowered my second ketamine dose and I didn’t have the after effects. I am planning to complete all six treatments. I have felt much less depressed, less brain fog and more energized. I have been able to get things done which I haven’t been able to do for over a year. If you are thinking about trying ketamine I strongly suggest you do and if you have any after effects please tell the staff as they can adjust the dose. You may also want to keep a journal of how you reacted and what your thought processes were while taking ketamine. They also monitor you closely during the ketamine session. I am very grateful to Dr. Calabrese and her staff. They have given me hope.
Addendum: It has been a year since I first started ketamine. I went for all six treatments and did about six more treatments, one per month as a booster. The treatments did help, but after reading that taking benzodiazepines could dull the effects, I decided to come off of them for fourteen days before my next treatment. (It takes fourteen days to get benzodiazepines out of your system) The pro was that my treatment seemed much more intense. If you can come off benzodiazepines for fourteen days before a treatment I highly recommend it. I take clonazapam for restless leg syndrome and it helps me sleep. I substituted three mg of melatonin and I did fine. The one con was I had bad nightmares that evening after the ketamine treatment and was very anxious the next day. I took my clonazapam and I was fine in a few hours. The pro is I have not had to go for another ketamine treatment for the past three months. Also, ketamine can make you constipated even if you stay hydrated. I simply took senocot before bedtime and this resolved the problem. I definitely recommend ketamine treatment for those who are still on the fence.
I have been on SSRI's for almost 20 years with little improvement on heavy bouts of depression and anxiety that last 2-3 years at a time. My physician's answer has always been to try increasing my dose, but I finally came to the conclusion that if something is not effective, more of it is redundant - some problems need a scalpel; not broad brush strokes. After several years of researching different approaches I came across the topic of ketamine therapy, and the feedback from doctors and patients in that field seemed unanimously promising. I found Dr. Calabrese's practice through a search online, and after several months of deliberation I finally went forward. I am 3 treatments in and couldn't be more glad that I did. Mind you, there is no silver bullet out there that flips a switch to launch you into perpetual bliss no matter what, but unlike anything else I have ever pursued to try to get a handle on things, this has almost miraculously put me in a space where I am more optimistic and do not feel constantly overwhelmed or depleted, so when regular life-stress occurs it is merely an interval rather than crippling. During my intake appointment with Dr. Calabrese, my initial feeling was that she has a highly-focused approach in her assessment and is very effective in preparing you for the treatment as well as how to develop your mindset in between and afterward. She is specialized in her understanding of the physiological mechanisms of the treatment with respect to how it treats depression/anxiety/PTSD while also explaining it in a manner that one can understand. As for the treatment itself - it is nothing like I've ever experienced...not even close. If you decide to pursue this, afterward you will understand exactly what I mean in that you cannot truly put words to it, yet at the same time the experience lends an awareness that doesn't need words to understand because it is profoundly deeper than any description you'll find. Just a word of advice - use a sleep mask; if you keep your eyes open the room will get very weird and may distract you and make you feel a little unsettled initially if it is your first treatment. All I can say is that I hope more people who have suffered from depression etc. for a long time will discover this and have the means to be treated. -M.
