I have visited this museums twice now and enjoy it each time. I would highly recommend coming in the morning so that you can spend some time here and get great information from the curator that has a lot of knowledge and insight on just about every pice. The facility is very nice and well taken care of. If you are looking for somewhere to learn more about early tools this is a great place. The museum down the road is another great place to visit once you have checked out the Sloane Museum.
If you love wooden tools from the colonial times, check this out. Be in awe of the hard labor men and women had to endure in those times while you over appreciate your soft bed, running water, and home Depot back home. I had never heard of Eric Sloane but he has a famous painting at the Smithsonian. Interestingly, he studied weather and there are sketches he made of theories wind, air flow, etc. I re-creation of his art studio is in the back with all of the original items that were in the studio donated by his wife.
Interesting place to visit and learm about minerals, animals, and history od Conbecticut. Also lots to learn about coal mins and history of development of that industry
The best least known place to visit if you're in the Kent, CT area. Will not disappoint.
Surprised more schools don't do day trips to this place! Awesome history. Also "crystals" available, trains and dinosaurs!
A remarkable display of tools and implements that vividly describe the efforts of prior generations to accomplish farming and farm life. The relative evolution of these tools from their beginning to modern day iterations is even more astonishing in that most of them were handmade by the landowners and not a factory. Well informed staff were on hand to share their knowledge of Sloanes’ collection as well as the history of the museum, grounds and Kent Iron Works. Self guided tours with lots of written explanation of the items on hand.
