Beautiful, serene, informative.
My mother, an artist, had been wanting to go here for 15 years. The look on her face said it all. She was inspired. I couldn’t help but feel inspired, myself.
Weir Farm is secluded. You have to drive through rolling hills and wilderness to get there, but it’s worth it. My parents, my sister, and I went here in June and it was perfect. Everything was green. You can see why artists would gather here to create amazing works.
The volunteers love what they do, you can tell. Take a tour through the studios and farmhouse. Everything is well crafted and faithfully preserved from Weir’s time here.
I loved that they give you the ability to create a watercolor piece of your own - for free. It’s peaceful to sit on the grass and paint.
Highly recommend going here.
Awesome place to stop! Take you time and walk around and head down to the lake :)
There is a meadow which is pleasant to walk in. I like the bear wood cut outs. But as you walk into the woods the trails contain a lot of roots and rocks. It is mostly flat, so right after a good rain expect a little mud. Lots of mtn Laurel but not yet in bloom. Maybe in late may
This is a very quiet National Park. It’s rather deep into the Connecticut countryside (I think) and that helps showcase where Weir wanted to be when he was painting. The grounds are very nice, but make sure to watch out for mud when it’s damp out!
Also there are bears 🐻
This is an unusual national park, as is showcases the life of an American painter.
I recommend bringing a comfortable chair, your artist's materials, and a friend or two similarly equipped. Or your kids. I'll bet you've never done art as a family before!
They do everything they can to encourage the public to come paint and draw. They've preserved many beautiful vistas, and they even have paints and materials to loan. They also have materials for kids, and workshops for adults, kids and families.
It's also a really nice place to just go for a walk, and walk the dog and kids. It's all rolling Connecticut farmland, so it's not especially hard, and it is beautiful.
