  I greatly appreciate that places like this are still open in any weather and that they are free. I am grateful to Kathleen for working and being there to share the history of the museum.
  
  There is a lower level and upper level. The museum is super cool and filled with history!
  
  I loved the old tools ans photographs. Kathleen was super informative, kind and nice. She knew so much and shared with us just a brief glimpse of the history of the town.
  
  I recommend this place as a unique pit stop and I intend on returning!!

  So glad we decided to stop in. Say yes to a tour, Kathleen taught us so much about the very historical town of Shandaken. She has an enormous collection of very interesting artifacts, photos, etc. that you could spend hours checking out

  I love this building and what it represents. A time that is long gone and forgotten. Going through the different exhibits, it gave me a sense of how simple and difficult life once was. Smaller schools, neighborly neighbors and feeling of being home, where everybody knows your name.

  Phenomenal museum ... ! You would never believe what culture existed in this region of the catskills and the amazing cultural men and women of our generation that emerged from the area. Heck, Neil Diamond played his first gig ever just down the road from the museum ... It's a must stop. You'll have new appreciation for the area. And the enthusiastic director of the museum, a native American woman herself, runs you through a very descriptive and exciting narrative of the landscape ... the big hotels ... the railroads .... and the story of Big Indian .. standing well over 7' plus, the town Big Indian was named for him and how he was murdered for marrying a white woman. Interesting place .... It's a hidden gem in the area.

About :: Shandaken Historical Museum

10am to 4pm. The Shandaken Historical Museum began as the second school house of Pine Hill, District #10. There were two school rooms on the second floor. Where the office of the museum is now located was the library. The two school rooms were divided by a cloak room used by both rooms. The room to the right was used by the upper grades.
