This was my grandparents' (William "Bill" and Lucy Tapper) church, and they raised my dad and Aunt Judy there. Bill and Lucy Tapper began attending New Hanover Lutheran Church, starting on December 1, 1945, having been invited by Pastor Edger M. Cooper, to hear him preach his very first sermon as the new pastor of the church, following the Rev. Dr. Kline's retirement. It must have been a real humdinger of a sermon, as they joined the church and remained members until their deaths, Bill Tapper in 1976 and Lucy Tapper in 1983. They are both buried there. Every time we came up to visit Grandma and Pop Pop from North Carolina, we went to church on Sunday with them and I have the fondest memories of Pastor Cooper, one being Easter Sunrise Service, I believe in 1975 or 1976. It was our last Easter vacation there before Pop Pop passed away in June 1976. There was an Easter lunch on the grounds with an Easter Egg Hunt for all the children. Pastor Cooper gave me a special prize for finding the only two "non-hidden by church staff" Easter Eggs. I had actually found two Bob White Quail eggs in a nest on the ground beneath a shrub bush. I don't know if they ever hatched out or not, as Pastor Cooper and my dad, Bob Tapper, escorted me back to the nest to replace the eggs where I had found them, dad and Pastor Cooper laughing the whole way as Pastor Cooper joked with dad about the "Apple didn't fall too far from the ole tree"! Pastor Cooper had a cabin in the North Carolina mountains and invited us up to his cabin one 4th of July weekend around 1979 or 1980 for a cookout and fireworks show.
So many great memories of Pastor Cooper and our visits to New Hanover Lutheran Church. Much love, peace, prosperity and wish for continued growth for the congregation of New Hanover Lutheran Church. God Bless you all, richly! 🙏🏼

This place is absolutely beautiful staffed by the most amazing people. I've learned about it while browsing the internet trying to find Christian summer camps for the little ones. I was able to sign up for a free summer camp. They have a super cool program designed for the little ones to learn about God. They have an attached school like facility and the kids have inside and outside activities. They provide snacks and modt staff are
School teachers donating their time. I am grateful for this place.
Was there for Christmas mass. The pastor there is great! And the church itself is amazing. I reccomend this church yo anyone looking to be welcomed with open arms.
New Hanover Lutheran Evangelical Church allowed our family to hold its annual Reunion at its facilities in June 2017. It was like a home coming for our family. Why? In 1717 our 7th great grandfather, Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel and his family, came to America from the Palatinate to pastor the church from 1717 to 1728. The current church completed in 1767 is in pristine condition and was filled with Henckel Family members.
Every member left the church in a state of awe, over finally getting to visit the church that they had heard and read about for many years.
The Henckel Family thanks the members of NHLC for the opportunity to give each of us the opportunity better understand our family's history. Everyone we encountered at the church could not have been more friendly and helpful to our group.
A special thanks to Susan, Lee, Ron and Chris for all your help.
