Of all of Lambertville's antique stores, James Curran's is our favorite. James has helped us find some amazing deals--including our all-time favorite, a dining room table from a monastery in Canterbury that cost less than a new dining room table would have. His store is fun for browsing, but even if that's all we intend to do, we almost always wind up finding something irresistible and bringing it home
The goto place for furniture restoration. Midcentury, antiques, and character pieces all can be brought back to life here in the hands of a knowledgeable and fair team of furniture restoration experts. Their restorative powers compete with superhero status. The new location at Cane Farm in Rosemont is an enjoyable gallery of stories told through furniture worth the visit. If you get there at the right time you might be lucky enough to find the owner playing guitar!
Bought a nice dining room table there today. Owner knowledgeable and prices are reasonable. He sells a lot of antiques so there is always fresh inventory.
Here’s the thing about James Curran Antiques and Restoration in Lambertville, NJ: Those of us who know fine furniture would rather keep his shop a secret. We’d rather keep it all to ourselves, because his store is a collector’s dream. Few places like his still exist. His is not an antique mall stuffed with junk. His is a large shop filled with finely crafted English, French, and American antique furniture, clocks, and artwork, among a few other collectibles. I have been studying antique furniture for over thirty years, and I can attest that Curran’s knowledge and eye for selecting fine antique furniture and other select pieces is outstanding. He travels to England, buys, ships it back to Lambertville, and sells at reasonable prices. My wife once said, “I wish we had an empty house to fill, I’d buy all of our furniture from him.” Curran is a professional who knows his furniture, knows his woods, and does restoration work as well.
As if this is not enough, the other thing about Curran and his staff is their remarkable manner. They are never snooty because of their superior knowledge in a niche area, but always friendly, upbeat, and helpful. They love talking about antique furniture and have always taken the time to answer my endless questions on a piece’s construction, proportions, history, and every other detail right down to the last dovetail. And the icing on the cake: Curran and his staff can fix and restore antiques in an exempliar fashion.
I hate to say it, but go see James Curran Antiques. Be prepared to find an exquisite example of fine furniture you will cherish the rest of your life. I have. I’ve bought several pieces from him including a period drop-leaf, wide-board, mahogany dining table made of the finest mahogany available two hundred years ago (not today) with such beautiful figure in the wood, you can’t help but reach out and touch it. It is something I thought I’d never be able to afford, but with the prices in the antique market as soft as they are now, I can. Curran knows this market and his pieces are priced to sell.
James has some truly beautiful pieces. He travels to England and brings them back and then sells them totally refinished. His pieces tend to be more expensive, but you are getting a unique antique in solid condition.
