If you love AA history then you MUST take this tour!!!! I absolutely LOVED it!!! It began with brief (about 15 minutes) history inside church and then you have a guided tour by Mrs.Joanne (a member of Farmington historical society). Along the way, people are dressed as the characters who helped or knew the Mende during the 2 years they lived in Farmington before being granted their freedom to return to Sierra Leone.
I never thought I would tour a city where abolitionist lived etc. There is so much in store on this tour and you learn so much about the history of people in Farmington and the Mende.
It’s only on Friday’s and Saturday’s from 10:00-11:30am. I bought my ticket ($15) on eventbrite. This price is very reasonable considering what is offered on tour.
The performers are mostly writers (Leslie, Teresa, Beth) from nearby cities. Mr. Andre is also a writer who helped to produce tour. And there is another AA gentleman whom I forgot to get his name. Mrs. Sarah is a member of the church and plays Charlotte whose letters were found in 2000 and used to help tell the story.
The First Church of Christ, Farmington is also very instrumental in producing tour and a major part of the history of the Mende (tribe in Sierra Leone. It was founded in 1652. The Mende were allowed to attend service. You will learn about how and where they were allowed to sit during introduction.
You must go on this tour and meet the people who have brought the Mende to life!! And Farmington, CT is simply beautiful do you must make time to tour area while visiting!
