When Ed Nowak opened this store in 1964 or '65 it reminded me a lot of the Chester St. Market a few miles away. These little neighborhood markets were the original convenience stores. A ten-year-old kid like me having to bike that far away to Chester St. to turn in some returnables and get some penny candy or a bag of potato chips (State Line, of course!) was a pain, but having this place open up a half-mile away was great. Fresh local produce as well as fresh-sliced cold cuts and canned goods were available. Not the A&P down on Elm St. or Robert's Supermarket over on Westfield St. at King's Highway, but in a pinch Mr. Nowak always seemed to have what a neighborhood housewife or pesky kid needed at the last minute. Nice to see it's still in business. Hope it stayed in the Nowak family. They were good people.
Country store is a slice of history from the area. Small but has everything you need. I'd trade 500 cumbys just to keep this place open.
I have been going there since I was just a kid old enough to ride my bike up the street! The location is convenient! They have good hours and a great selection! The owners and staff are great people! It certainly fits it's name as a lovely "Country Store"!
