My experience, education and treatment at Cheyney University can be matched regarding faculty's teaching, support and compassion to only one of five universities I attended. It is the one where I received my Doctorate in Psychology, California Southern University When I was finishing my last semester at Cheyney, the Psychology Staff made a recommendation, for me to study Experimental Psychology at Princeton University. The professors at Cheyney were supportive and they encouraged my professional development. I studied for my Doctorate in Psychology for two years at The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. My enthusiasm, determination and compassion was not nurtured nor supported.
I was determined to pursue my goals for a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D). My performance at PCOM was excellent, the issue that led to a change Doctorate Programs, was unfairness and
Absolutely no support from administrators. I had 6 Graduate Statistics courses-all “A’s”, and the department decided to require an undergraduate Stat course. The professor treated me- the only African American unfairly, even though I was one of the only Active participating students in the class—I loved Statistics! He gave me an unfair grade affecting my GPA. I lost an appeal all was contrived in my opinion.
When I was a student at Cheyney University my strengths were recognized, (graduated, with a 3.98 GPA), because I studied, and put the work in that was required. I was referred to attend Princeton University; APA conferences; and the professors funded the expenses for two Psychology majors to go to the APA Conference. I was appointed to the National Honor's Association In Psychology by a Cheyney faculty member. I( I then pursued first Graduated degree at Norfolk State, in Norfolk, VA. Graduated, Summa Cum Laude in 1984.
When, I studied at Princeton, 1981, I observed and conducted an Experimental Research Project, which was under the supervision of a Graduate Student. I applied to the Doctorate Program of Neurophysiological Psychology. I was accepted with full scholarship.
At Cheney, Dr. Winslow, Dr. Berry, Dr. Means, Dr Chadwick, and Dr. Bronson were super supportive. Dr. Tate encouraged me to , "Keep going" he said, and I did continue my education. I received full scholarship and the Ralph Bunch Fellowship from Rutgers School of Social Work , Camden NJ, 1997. Graduated with Social Work Honors, in 1998, and got a License . Then, after PCOM , applied to California Southern University at Irvine California, graduated with a Psychology Doctorate, and published a book about the theories and studies of ADHD, Hyperactive/Impulsive Subtype, (view on Amazon). Educational goals started with the Associate Degree in Arts and Sciences at Community College (3.77 GPA) and graduation. Then, experiencing two colleges that were unsupportive, Temple and PCOM. The Cheyney Professors and administration care Student's Success.
The education at Cheyney was and is supportive ,and the faculty strives to help you to succeed. Your success depends on your own determination and consistency. I encourage anyone to study at Cheyney. I have several good friends who are graduates. One is a teacher. He credits a Cheyney professor for his success as a Certified Teacher. He said it got tuff for him and the professor recognized his passion and academic problems which were unrelated to his intellectual ability. It was associated with some other struggle that our young African American males may encounter in life. The professor believed in him, and helped him to believe in himself. He completed an assignment in which he is proud of today. He is now a compassionate teacher and musician. Next, another male after graduating managed a program of over 90 mentally ill clients and his team. We identify as being a part of the Cheyney family and are proud graduates.I encourage anyone reading this commentary to judge Cheyney from your own experience or perspective, because it is the one that will make the difference in most aspects of your life.
I love my HBCU..I was voted "Miss Freshman 2017-2018" and I had so much fun . I am sadly transferring, because they are taking away the sports programs and I was on a track scholarship, but my experience at Cheyney was unforgettable. Its a family atmosphere to say the least, everyone knows each other on campus which makes it comfortable even for freshman.
I love Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. I am honored to say that I will be graduating from Cheyney University in May, 2018. An unmatched college experience at a University that has been established to educate African Americans. I encourage all high school senior to apply to Cheyney University. Come visit the University and walk our historical campus and eat from Ada George’s dinning Hall. Better yet, if you do not feel like siting grab a “BRB” from our famous snack bar!
Despite the issues at the university, Cheyney has created a reflective and visionary leader in myself. I would not have went to any other HBCU, or any other PASHEE school. Cheyney taught me that it was safe to be black in modern day America. Being that I transferred in to CU, I know that the issues Cheyney faces, every other school faces. I love my HBCU.
