  There is No racetrack, This wooded area has long been named the Butler Race or just the "Race". The race carries water from the dam to the mill site/ or pump site. Just so you know what I am talking about: A race may be from a few feet to miles in length depending on the distance between the dam and the mill site. At the mouth of the race there is often a "TRASH RACK," which stops floating logs and large debris from damaging the water wheel. Behind the trash rack and at the end of the race are "GATES." The gates allow the mill operator to control how much water is in the race and enters the water wheel. These two types of gates are called "HEAD GATE" and "SLUICE GATE" (or "CONTROL GATE.") A "FLUME," "SLUICE" or "PEN STOCK" carries the water at an elevated level above ground to the water wheel. Flumes are either open or closed, while a pen stock is in the form of water tight pipe. Pen stocks are either cast iron pipe, sheet iron pipe, concrete pipe, or the traditional wooden pipe. Later mills had dams with water being led to the wheel by a short race or flume. After the water flows through the water wheel it is then returned to the stream below the mill. It flows through a "TAIL RACE." >>>>>> Now, the Race located in Butler in no longer a functional race. But at one time it carried water from the Pequannock River at a dam located at Waterfall Village in Bloomingdale NJ and it directed this water above and below ground into pipes until the water made it to the Butler Hard Rubber Company in Butler NJ. Once the water reached the Rubber Mill it was pressurized and it was then used to help keep the rubber cutting machines cool. After that the water was then directed back into a drain and then flowed back under the Rubber Plant and under the street, under the Butler Park and then back out and into the Stone House Brook located across from the Butler Police Station.
